UmberLore is about how art actually got made and what happened to it afterwards: the paintings and buildings, the pigments they were made from, the movements they get filed under, and the forgeries and thefts that keep turning the filing upside down.

Art history has a specific problem that made this site worth starting. Dates, attributions, dimensions and current locations get copied from blog to blog until the copy no longer matches the object. So the rule here is that those details come from the institution that holds the work, and the collection page is cited so you can check it yourself. Where scholars genuinely disagree, that gets said rather than smoothed over.

Umber is the brown earth pigment that comes in every paint box, raw or burnt. Lore is the accumulated telling. The name is meant literally: the material facts, plus the stories that built up around them.

One thing you won't find here is reproductions of work still under copyright. Modern and contemporary artists are written about freely, because discussing art is not the same as copying it, but the images alongside those pieces are portraits, buildings, or diagrams rather than the works themselves.
