The four discrepancies, and the one that keeps surviving

The 2006 dissection worked through the painting one contested region at a time. The first was a sloping muscle bulge near the elbow that the Groningen team could not reproduce on their cadaver at all, not as a natural structure and not as a documented anatomical variation. The only way they could recreate its shape was by artificially cutting and repositioning a nearby tendon that Dr. Tulp would have had to lift out of its normal bed to expose the muscle underneath it, which reads less like an error than a demonstration choice: moving one structure aside to show another one more clearly.

The second and third regions both concern the muscle bundle sitting in Dr. Tulp's forceps. What the X-rays found under the paint

The 2006 paper drew on a separate line of evidence: the Mauritshuis's own technical restoration of the canvas, carried out from 1996 to 1998. That project found that the corpse's right hand, which appears whole in the finished painting, sits on top of an earlier layer showing an amputated stump. The researchers raise, without confirming, a specific possibility: Aris Kindt may have already lost that hand to an earlier punishment for theft, and Rembrandt's canvas first recorded the corpse as it actually looked before a later layer of paint restored the missing hand.
