Cloisonné: Scorned in 1388, an Emperor's Treasure Within 40 Years

China's leading antiquarian ruled cloisonné unfit for a scholar's studio in 1388. Byzantium prized it centuries earlier; Japan restarted the craft twice.

Cloisonné's reputation as an old, unbroken craft doesn't match the documented record in any of the three traditions most associated with it. In China, the earliest written mention of the technique is dismissive: Cao Zhao's 1388 antiquities guide, the Gegu Yaolun, rules copper enamelware fit only for a woman's chamber and, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's own account of that judgment, "not well suited to a more restrained atmosphere, such as that of a scholar's home." A 1388 verdict: fit for a woman's chamber, not a scholar's studio

The earliest written record of cloisonné in China isn't a technical description or a mark of pride. It's a put-down. In 1388, the antiquarian Cao Zhao published Gegu Yaolun, a guide to judging antiques that became the standard reference of its era. The Metropolitan Museum of Art's own essay on Chinese cloisonné renders the verdict plainly: Cao Zhao dismissed the ware as suitable only for lady's chambers, an opinion the Met describes as reflecting a broader view that the technique's "flamboyant splendor" suited the furnishing of temples and palaces but was "not well suited to a more restrained atmosphere, such as that of a scholar's home." Cao Zhao wasn't reviewing an established Chinese craft with a known pedigree. He was cataloguing an outsider, a decorative style that read to him as foreign and slightly vulgar, worth noting in an antiquities guide mainly as a warning against poor taste. A craft's documented timeline can get backdated on purpose, not just misjudged at first sight: a chiaroscuro woodcut inscribed 1506 and long credited to Lucas Cranach the Elder is now dated by the Cleveland Museum of Art to after 1508, once he had learned the tone-block technique from a rival.

That foreignness wasn't incidental. The Met's essay records that cloisonné is first documented in China under the Yuan dynasty, and that the technique's arrival has been linked to the western province of Yunnan, which received an influx of people from the Islamic world under Mongol rule. Cloisonné enamelwork had already been established for centuries further west, worked into Islamic metalwork and, before that, into Byzantine gold. Read against that background, Cao Zhao's dismissal looks less like an aesthetic complaint about a native Chinese object and more like the reaction of a scholar encountering an imported technique that hadn't yet earned any domestic standing at all.

Within four decades, the same ware furnished an emperor's court

The reversal was fast. The Met's essay states that the earliest securely dated Chinese cloisonné comes from the reign of the Ming Xuande emperor, 1426 to 1435, and that "by the period of Emperor Xuande, this ware came to be greatly prized at court," the opposite of Cao Zhao's verdict less than 40 years earlier. A small number of surviving pieces have been dated on stylistic grounds to the slightly earlier Yongle reign, 1403 to 1424, though the Met is careful to flag those as stylistic attributions rather than securely documented examples the way Xuande-period pieces are.

One of those early pieces sits in the Met's own collection: a squat cloisonné candlestick decorated with lotus scrolls, catalogued as late 14th to early 15th century and accessioned in 1929 as a gift from Edward G. Kennedy. Its turquoise ground and looping lotus vine, worked entirely in soldered copper wire and fired glass paste, belong to the same restrained repertoire of motifs that later filled Xuande-period court commissions. Whether this specific candlestick predates Xuande's reign or falls within its early years, it sits on the near side of the same short gap: a craft written off as a foreign curiosity in 1388 was furnishing an emperor's court well before the middle of the following century. A craft's reputation can flip just as fast toward closer scrutiny rather than prestige: conservation science has measured exactly what one-line textbook definitions of sfumato, impasto, and pointillism leave out, down to the width of individual paint-glaze layers.

Byzantium already had centuries of the same craft, in gold

China's dismiss-then-adopt story didn't happen in a vacuum. By the time Cao Zhao was writing in 1388, cloisonné enamel had already been a prestige medium in the Byzantine world for more than five centuries. The Met's own reliquary, the Fieschi Morgan Staurotheke, was made in the early ninth century, probably in Constantinople, to hold a fragment believed to be from the True Cross; the Met's own catalog dates it broadly to around 800, while Wikipedia's account of the object narrows that to 843, with some scholars proposing as early as 815. Its lid, worked in gilded silver, gold, and cloisonné enamel, depicts the Crucifixion surrounded by the busts of twenty-seven saints, with four more scenes announcing Christ as savior worked into the underside of the lid; the Met's own catalog also lists niello, a dark metal inlay technique, alongside the enamel among its materials, a reminder that the finest Byzantine cloisonné rarely used the technique in isolation. The technique's documented peak followed in the Pala d'Oro, the gold altarpiece of the Basilica di San Marco in Venice. Why the gold version didn't last in Western Europe

Byzantium's version of the craft didn't stay dominant everywhere it reached. Cloisonné construction relies on wire, historically gold or gilded silver, soldered onto a metal body to form the cell walls that hold the enamel. Wikipedia's entry on the competing technique of champlevé draws the construction difference plainly: champlevé's cells are "carved, etched, die struck, or cast into the surface of a metal object" rather than built from applied wire, an approach compatible with plain copper or bronze. Japan's line runs through two restarts, not one

Japan's cloisonné history looks continuous from a distance and turns out to have real gaps up close. According to the Nagoya workshop Katoshippo's own historical account, the technique reached Japan in the sixth and seventh century by way of China and Korea, and the oldest surviving Japanese example is a mirror, its back enameled in cloisonné, held today in the Shōsōin, the Nara repository of imperial treasures. The Japanese word for the craft, shippō-yaki, translates as "seven treasures," a reference Katoshippo traces to a list of precious materials, gold, silver, lapis lazuli, giant clamshell, agate, pearl, and carnelian, named in the Lotus Sutra; the name was given, by that account, because finished cloisonné was considered as beautiful as those seven substances. Production resumed centuries later, in the early Edo period, when Donin Hirata of Kyoto learned the technique from craftspeople from the Korean peninsula and applied it to sword fittings and architectural hardware. That secrecy produced another gap rather than a gradual spread of the technique. Sotheby's own historical account of Japanese cloisonné states that although Chinese enamels had been imported into Japan and highly valued there since at least the seventeenth century, "there was apparently no production of three-dimensional cloisonné-enamel objects in Japan until the early nineteenth century." The craft's modern Japanese history is credited to Kaji Tsunekichi, a former samurai from Owari province turned metal-gilder. Citing a summary of Kaji's own account of his career, published in the art journal The Studio in June 1911, Sotheby's dates the breakthrough to around 1838: Kaji acquired a piece of Chinese cloisonné enamel, took it apart to work out how it had been made, and by 1839 had produced a six-inch plate of his own. His work later reached the Tokugawa court in Edo, presented by the feudal lord of Owari. The same shape, three times over

Line the three traditions up and the pattern repeats. Each has a documented low point, whether that's Cao Zhao's dismissal, the abandonment behind champlevé's rise, or Japan's outright production gap, and each low point is followed by a comparatively fast climb to the prestige version of the craft that collections and textbooks now treat as cloisonné's default image. That's a different shape from the steady, cumulative transmission implied by phrases like "an ancient technique," the kind of framing that also undersells how recent some now-standard art vocabulary actually is: the very checklist used to describe any painting's formal structure turns out to date to a specific 1899 classroom textbook rather than to any older inherited tradition. Cloisonné's popular history has the same problem in reverse, treating a craft with real, dateable interruptions as an unbroken line running back through each culture's antiquity.

The word-versus-object gap shows up elsewhere in decorative and ritual art too: the word mandala is documented nearly two thousand years before the earliest surviving pictorial mandala, a comparable distance between an assumed origin point and what the physical record actually supports. Cloisonné's case is sharper because the record isn't ambiguous about the gaps. Cao Zhao's 1388 dismissal, the Hirata family's guarded secrecy, and Sotheby's flat statement that Japan produced no three-dimensional cloisonné for roughly two centuries are all specific, dated, sourced claims, not inference from missing evidence. The craft now displayed in museum galleries as a mark of continuous cultural refinement went unmade, unwanted, or deliberately hidden at three separate points in three separate places before it ever reached a case.
