Side-by-side responsibilities
Job posts blur the titles, especially at startups where one person wears both hats. The clean agency model still helps when you are reading a JD or negotiating seniority.
BLS's Art Directors profile describes people who create design concepts and review material for visual publications and products: newspapers, magazines, packaging, cinema, and similar visual media [BLS OOH: Art Directors, checked 2026-10-19]. Creative director work shows up inside that work and inside advertising management titles, but BLS does not publish a standalone "Creative Directors" OOH page with its own SOC code.
Where titles inflate or collapse
Small studios often call the senior designer a creative director because clients expect the phrase. Large holding-company agencies may have group creative directors above creative directors, with art directors still doing day-to-day visual leadership.
Film and games use overlapping words differently: a film production's art director often reports to a production designer (as the next section notes), which is not the same reporting line as an ad-agency creative director.
AIGA career guidance on hiring digital art directors likewise frames the role as directing visual assets and campaign execution short of owning the entire brand strategy stack [AIGA: How to Hire a Digital Art Director].
Related role splits
Film and television put the day-to-day visual lead under a production designer. That reporting line is not the same ladder as an advertising creative director supervising art directors.
